Yes, think of how much it's worth NOW!
The best thing Helen achieved here was her new found detachment to material things. A lesson delivered to her through the innocent play of children. Wonderful.
This is a beautiful dream home that fits perfectly in the tiny city space that the owners bought. It looks more like a 1.5 million pound home in the city to me.
This is very inspiring for me, as I am the elder, with two daughters here now, and 2 grandsons. We are going to build something, just figuring out what, I have already started a garden, on small scale as I still work 50 hours per week.
This was the 1st episode that actually made me want to grab and adult beverage and a stress ball when it aired! lol
Anyone else look at the date and think, ooh, lockdown, shipping delays, and inflation coming?
All these builders who fell.in love with CA hoping to replicate it in rainy UK, does seem there is another obvious solution. Esp as this was pre Brexit, obviously not now.
Wow!
In what world was a £70,000 budget going to be enough to renovate a 400 y/o house, especially when it's listed?? Goes to show even if you're a city professional you can definitely have a deficit of common sense.
An abothycary?
I'd have liked to have seen the boy's rooms.
"Frozen velvet"!!! Wonderful.
I want to know if the issues with the aerodrome window (double glazing) were resolved....? And, bloody hell but that thing is SLOW!!! And WHY do you have to stand there with your finger on the button for an eternity??? (It's an egg timer).
Thank you for posting these! They're a delight.
Really sweet couple.
I'm surprised by how well it turned out ... but, like Kevin, I think the great slab on the roof at the front is a monstrosity. Had it been less obtrusive, not jutting out AS MUCH, I think it would have worked. AS IS, it is bad design, like the frame on a picture that calls attention to itself, rather than simply holding the picture. It's self-conscious. The rest is really beautiful.
Glorious Renovation!! I know it's mostly a new build, but it certainly does feel like a renovation! At the beginning of the show, even well into the half way mark, I didn't think I would care too much for the concrete style inside the house. I'm definitely NOT a fan of Brutalist Architecture. Surprisingly, I really DO LOVE IT!! They've warmed it up beautifully! Those stairs in the entry are just fantastic. And the kitchen is so inviting. Well, ALL the rooms are now designed in a very nice and comfortable style. And the view of the back of the house is stunning! Bravo!!! 👏👏👏👏👏
I thought the little bit of cheeky sendoff at the end with the tub was the perfect ending. Wonderfully done, and well executed. The company I used to work for in the mid to late 90's had been using roughed out shipping containers at tunneling sites in Morocco since the early 80's for both the Machine mechanics and rotating workers. Not a new idea, but one that has caught on, and I'm so glad it has. Too bad the prices have shot up so much since then on used shipping containers. 4000 for a 40', not including delivery. The last batch I bought was 12-20' containers for a raise drill, and pipe. Paid 500 ea delivered to our shop. They were a yr old, and that was in 97.
Very cool home - i hope they've been very happy in it - would love to see a follow-up on how it looks now.
curious how their dog handled that paving choice outside - seems like it could break it's legs.
First thing I looked for and was happy to see when Kevin walked in the house were the 16+ hand made ducts that Peter had made for the utilities. Right in the middle of the ceiling, down the center of the building. Best place for them to go. I was so hoping he wouldn't have tried to put them on a wall, and so glad they looked so good. Well done. I just wish he would have included her a lot sooner, then they both could have saved on the headache medicine. Dr. Heal thyself. 😉 The place still looks great, although the neighbors seem to have encroached a little more. Must say that the opening of that circle was put in the best position for then and now.
Absolutely beautiful.
Nooooo to Brutalism! I spent years in Brutalist university buildings, echoey, cold and clammy, no matter the furnishings. Like living in a car park.
This is just so incredible that this couple took this journey. Thank you so much for sharing your life of a home.
Jane’s voice 😖
Damn, this is gorgeous, and how in TH did he do it on that budget??
They say the best way to judge a country is by the laughter of the kids, the boys in this family are crazy happy.Maybe the boys have absorbed the smiles/excitement and joy of their parents which have created a home that brings amazement to everyone within. It’s easy to sense that their home will continue bring more comfort and they will feel better and better seeing that the trust with the contractor was the icing on the cake. This home will create a lot of laughter within , they did it and succeeded incredibly well. Their lives are now a living cinema…
Such a nice thing to say! ❤
Love seeing how this architectural journey has taken the owners where they never imagined and helped them see the beauty where they had never seen it before.
It seems to be a prfect home for Natasha and her son. Sad that there so many hoops to jump through, but worth it in the end. Beautiful home. Wishing them a wonderful life. Thank you for sharing. ❤❤
I've always wanted a small 'coffee nook' in the master bedroom and the private balcony to drink my morning cup and watch the sunrise. I like this house.
Every time I watch this episode I am stunned by this home!
It would have been much simpler to simply build on stilts as they do in Florida. The lower level become a covered patio and the whole house is elevated.
They don’t have hurricanes/ 3-4 meter storm surges/ winds over 90 mph-105 kilometers and the sea rising’s won’t eventually destroy the residence as what is/going to happen in Florida. There a reason why the insurance companies are canceling the policies there.
This house plan is very well thought out.
Loved it!
I loved this episode! The couple where delightful and the home is super!
Keeping the family TOGETHER in this new beautiful home is the most sustainable thing imaginable. It was truly nailbiting watching the difficulties they encountered on this build, the heartbreaking news of Mike's father especially. And of course one forgets the problems with sourcing supplies and British weather. But the outcome is beautiful, if hard won.
It’s stunning
Code 6 sounds like good intentions with extremely cruel rules that could erase any of those intentions. Imagine being so concerned about waste, then WASTING the home if one percent doesn't meet some abitrarily strict conditions. 😢
I think I'd rather have the gas issue found at slab stage than be living in a ticking timebomb and not know it.
Those bedrooms are ridiculously small and those stairs are tight to pass someone...By now, I hope they've installed camera's so if someone knocks on the door it won't take 10 minutes just to get downstairs.
I can’t do this anymore! 00,01% of humans can do this and I don’t care to watch it 😘good byeeeerr
They mentioned services once, but never came back to it. How does the sewage system work? Electricity? City Water?
Very very nice!
What an interesting bold idea. I am thankful there are people that can create their vision for the home they truly want. Well done. I like it!!!
This one has been my favorite! I wish they would revisit it now.
I live in the North Eastern US so all these flat rubber roofs freak me out. Isn’t there snow? Ice? Isn’t the Gulf Stream shifting with the global warming and weather changes? Where does the water drain from that steep slope behind the house?
I can’t tell if they’re naïve, crazy, or both
"Climate Change" *snort* What a grift!
What a remarkable feat of engineering!! My hat is off to everyone involved. I just LOVE this house!! And while the siding material & design is not my favorite, I don't hate it either! I bet it grows on you!! Kevin is right, we DO need more homeowners taking these kinds of chances! I'm in the states, and all the houses along our coastlines that get ruined by floods is a HUGE number every year. Entire cities turned into a disaster area overnight, yet if there were more builds like this - AND they COULD withstand hurricane force winds - JUST WOW!!!!! Just think how different the outcome of hurricane Katrina would have been to New Orleans back when that happened if everyone had a floating dolphin house... (I mean... It HAS been known to happen - that ONE house which is still standing among the wreckage after hurricane force winds have blown everything else down, that ONE BUILDER is doing SOMETHING right! ) Just think of the savings in both money, but more importantly, the safety of people, AND - the physical waste of destruction that's eliminated which the human element brings to mother nature's wrath! A more perfect place where flooding occurs, but without the hurricane winds are all the hundreds of cities and towns lining the Mississippi River! Or any other big river. They could do these kinds of houses with the fabulous dolphins!! And there you have it, the destruction which floods do to buildings is all taken care of! This seems very exciting to me! Now... All we have to do is come up with ONE MILLON DOLLARS - PER HOUSEHOLD!! And every Business. Hmmmm... Maybe if a whole city does it together they can get a bulk discount??
